Moong dal curry

Ingredients: 

  • Moong dal(cherupayar) -100 gm
  • Onion – 1 medium
  • garlic – 4 cloves
  • Green chili -3 finely chopped
  • Coconut – 1/2 coconut( finely grated).
  • Turmeric powder 
  • Chili powder
  • Salt needed
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds -1 tsp
  • Curry leaves- few
  • Cumin seeds
  • Shallots : 3 to 4

Instructions:

Soak Moong dal(cherupayar) for 30 minutes. Cook 3 whistles in a pressure cooker with 1/2 tbs of salt. Once cooked off the flame.

In a mixer add the grated coconut,1/4 tbs cumin seed , 2 or 3 garlic cloves and required(maximum 1/2 glass water) water to make it a thick paste. grind well. Once it is crushed ,but before forming paste add 2 or 3 onions(Shallots ), 1 stem curry leaves and make a paste of it.

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard , once spluttered mustard , add finely chopped chili. Stir it well. once it start to turn its color add chopped onions. Saute the onion until it turns it color. Add Moong dal into pan and mix well. Add required salt, 1/2 chili powder, and 1/4 turmeric powder. Saute for 3 minutes( upto change the raw taste of powders).

Add coconut paste also now.  Add water now, based on gravy needed. Cook it for 6 to 7 minutes. once started bubbling off the flame.

In a pan add 1 tbs of oil and splutter mustard. Then add curry leaves and red chilies. Add this mixture into the prepared curry.

Tasty and simple cherupayar curry ready to serve. Serve with puttu, pathiri etc…
