Vellappam (Palappam)
Vellappam, ( പാലപ്പം ) Also called Palappam , appam , is a kerala style recipe, usually preparing for breakfast. Its recipe is simple also with three main ingredients.
Yeast is used for fermentation of mixture. Also you can prepare without using yest palappam. In this case we need to add baking soda, or coconut water.
For 10 to 15 nos:
Ingredients:
- Row rice (Pachari): 250gm
- Grated Coconut: 1/2 coconut
- Cooked rice: 1 small cup
- Yeast: 8 to 10 balls or baking soda : 1/4 tbs
- salt : 1/2 tbs to 3/4
- Sugar : 1/2 tbs
- water: as needed, or use coconut water or tender coconut water.
Preparation:
Soak the rice for 2 hours. Wash and drain out the water from it.
Grind(using a mixer) the rice and Grated Coconut using 1 cup of water(coconut water or tender coconut water). if required add more water.
Soak yeast in 1/4 glass hot water.
Once it grind well, add cooked rice , 1/2 tbs salt, 1/2 tbs of sugar, and baking soda or soaked yeast. Then again grind it well. Set aside //overnight.
In pan( or Appam maker) pour some oil, spread it all over the pan.
Once get hot, pour 1 ladle of batter into the pan and spread it in round shape by swirling the pan. Close the pan with lid. Once it cooked take out the appam from pan.
Kerala style vellaappam ready to serve.
